Monday March 21st is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. It is a global day that acknowledges the injustices and prejudices that are fueled by racial discrimination. It is annually observed on March 21, in commemoration of March 21, 1960, a day where 69 racialized people were shot and killed at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws", by police in Sharpeville, South Africa. This was a law that required black South Africans over the age of 16 to always carry a passbook everywhere they went.

In Canada, progress has been made in eliminating racial discrimination, but there are still many individuals, communities, racialized groups, and religious minorities who suffer from racism. At the OCDSB, we are strengthened by the diverse population of our community, and we value equity, diversity and inclusion. Today, like every other day, we reaffirm our efforts to combat all forms of racial discrimination, systemic racism and hate in order to create an environment where everyone feels safe and respected.

We all have a role to play in ensuring safety and respect, irrespective of race or ethnicity. Every day, each and every one of us has a duty to  stand up against racial discrimination. If you experience or witness someone being bullied, harassed or discriminated against because of their race or ethnicity, speak up and tell a trusted adult at school. We will take action to stop and address it. Let’s build a world beyond racism and discrimination, by joining the youths worldwide to stand up together against racism.
